What is yoga therapy?

The International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT) defines yoga therapy as “the professional application of the principles and practices of yoga to promote health and well-being within a therapeutic relationship that includes personalized assessment, goal setting, lifestyle management and yoga practices for individuals or small groups.”

Practices include, among others:

gentle physical postures

breathing practices

mindfulness

working with imagery and intention

meditation

mudras

Yoga therapy is a holistic modality, which takes the entire individual into account. The yoga therapist enables clients to learn more about themselves and recommends specific yoga practices to engage and empower them in their own healing process.

Yoga therapy is generally practiced one-on-one and in small group sessions. You do not need any experience with yoga. Yoga therapy sessions are tailored to each person’s unique circumstances and health challenges with the goal of improving, maintaining and optimizing health and well-being. The goals of yoga therapy include managing or eliminating symptoms that cause suffering, improving function and helping to prevent or remove the underlying causes of illness.

“Ingrid designs a customized yoga therapy plan to help you focus on specific life and health issues.

This is done thoughtfully and gently from the first session discussion and practice to the last session.”
